Bass Ensemble Composer Competition Winners

⁣Congratulations to Alaina Ferris and Nyokabi Kariuki, winners of the 2019/20 Bass Ensemble Composer Competition.

Their compositions will receive a world premiere performance by the Brooklyn Youth Chorus Bass Ensemble.

About the composers:

Alaina Ferris is a composer, poet, and music educator whose work explores how multiplayer alternate realities (whether, musically, digitally, or theatrically created) can foster trust and empathy in communities. She was selected as a 2019 National Sawdust Summerlab Musician. She is a 2019-2021 Composer Fellow at The American Opera Project. She has a B.A. in Music & Creative Writing from the University of Denver, and an M.F.A. in Poetry from New York University.

Nyokabi Kariuki is a Kenyan composer, performer and writer based in New York City, where she is pursuing a BM in Music Composition at NYU Steinhardt. Her music ranges from classical contemporary to choral, pop, electronic, film, and everything in between. Nyokabi’s works have been performed across the United States as well as internationally, from Nairobi, Kenya to Melbourne, Australia.
