Alexandre Kantorow, a “fire-breathing virtuoso” (Gramophone), performs Brahms’s monumental Romantic concerto, beloved for its central Adagio, which Brahms called “a gentle portrait” of Clara Schumann. Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream’s blend of comedy and romance is brilliantly captured in Mendelssohn’s music, from the braying donkey in the Overture, fairies in the Scherzo, to joyous newlyweds in the famous wedding march. Iván Fischer conducts.
