Pre-Preparatory Music Class for ages 5 & 6
Give your child a head start in their musical journey and enroll them in our new Pre-Preparatory Music Class for ages 5 & 6. This class is aimed at activating each child’s musical potential in a play-based informal setting that feeds their creativity while building foundational music skills.
No audition necessary!

Registering for the Pre-Prep class is easy! To register, simply create a new account (or sign-in to your existing account) on our Parent Portal. Then choose the Pre-Preparatory Class and complete the registration process in the Parent Portal. You will receive enrollment confirmation once you have completed registration.
About the Pre-Preparatory Music Class
In this class we will work to engage children ages 5 & 6 (Kindergarten and First Grade) in playful music and movement activities that build their awareness of musical concepts such as beat, rhythm, and tonality. These early experiential learning experiences in music lay a strong foundation for progressing within Brooklyn Youth Chorus and beyond.
In this “play-based” learning environment children will engage with a curriculum designed to stimulate their drive for exploration and discovery. While singing and playing, children use all of their senses while they connect what they already know with the new knowledge and skills they are obtaining.
Classes start in September with breaks that roughly align with the public school holiday schedule. There is no end of semester performance for this class.
Students in the Pre-Preparatory Class will:
Explore and experience music concepts such as beat, rhythm, and melodic contour.
Generate musical ideas such as movements and vocalizations.
Explore music’s expressive qualities such as dynamics, tempo, and voice quality (spoken vs sung, high vs. low register)
Examples of Pre-Preparatory Class activities:
Walk or move to the beat
Read beat with icons
Differentiate between fast and slow
Differentiate between loud and soft
Sing/Play/Learn a variety of songs and rhymes
Demonstrate proper listening skills
Demonstrate a working knowledge of singing and matching pitch
Practice creative musical expression and dramatization
