Welcome to the BYCA Alumni Corner

One of the comments we most often hear from choristers is that BYCA feels like family. We feel that way too, which is why we want to catch up and learn about what you are doing—musically and otherwise.

We want to hear from you!

Alumni Spotlight on Ekela Dixon, "Kayla Bliss"

After graduating from the Chorus - after 8 years of training - Ekela couldn't allow her passion for music to wither away. She went on to study Jazz music at Long Island University, but even that path didn't seem like the right one. Fate stepped in when she ran into an old friend of her father, who just so happened to be CEO of an independent record label on the rise by the name of No Joke Records. It wasn't until after signing with the label that the staff realized how extraordinary her talent was. She could sing any genre of music with expertise, in any language as if she were fluent. Her writing skills were impeccable, and Ekela (who now goes by the name Kayla Bliss) thanks Brooklyn Youth Chorus for all of that. "The first thing that anyone in this industry ever has to say about me when I sing is my voice is crystal clear. Then they talk about my technique, and how they could understand every word I sang. When I was in Brooklyn Youth Chorus those qualities didn't seem special to me, because everyone in the chorus learned the same things I did. But when I stepped out into the world and realized what kind of edge I had against all my competition, I developed a new level of gratitude for Dianne, and everything she taught me". "Kayla Bliss" just recently released her debut album called Roads To Bliss and is also preparing for a highly anticipated performance at Madison Square Garden on May 10th.
