BYCA performed to a sold-out Kumble Theater audience at our Sweet Songs of Youth spring concert on May 20. Our Concert Chorus officially premiered BYCA's three season commissions: Please Smile by world-renowned jazz pianist and composer Fred Hersch with lyrics by Mary Jo Salter, The Sweets of Evening by new music pioneer Nico Muhly and Hope by Broadway composer and lyricist Andrew Lippa. 2005-06 Commissioned Composers. Before the performance, Ted Wiprud, Education Director of The New York Philharmonic, led a lively and infomative discussion among composers Lippa and Muhly and lyricist Salter. The panel addressed a wide range of topics, from the challenges and pleasures of composing for children's ever-changing voices to the working relationships between composers and lyricists. In addition to the commissions, the diverse program featured Latin and American jazz and classical music from the Baroque through the 21st century, including Bela Bartok's Six Children's Choruses sung a capella, Niccola Porpora's Magnificat accompanied by string quintet and Offenbach's Barcarolle from The Tales of Hoffman, which was performed by the combined Concert Chorus and Intermediate Division and accompanied by string quintet and woodwinds.
